Tips for Those Considering a Vacation to Iceland

Posted on September 2nd, 2010 in Parka by parka  Tagged , ,

First let me say, before I spew out all the negatives, that Iceland is a real gem of a country in more ways then I can say. But, the country is kind of an anomaly. It is small, very small and there are only about three hundred thousand Icelanders. That many people would make you would wonder how their economy survives. But it does and, in fact, they enjoy a very high standard of living. Iceland is also very beautiful, clean and exotic. The air is clean, the water is pure and the nature unspoiled. When the weather is good, enjoying the Icelandic outback is a world-class experience. Iceland is also a very modern place so you can enjoy all the amenities you are accustomed to. So, as I mentioned, if you are interested in visiting this beautiful land, here are some of the negatives you may want to be aware of.

First off I must mention the weather. Iceland’s weather is notoriously capricious. You can literally have four seasons in one day. That’s not just hyperbole; I have experienced it for myself. Also, it is almost never really warm. The average summer temperature is somewhere in the mid-to-high 50s. That isn’t to say that on occasion it can’t get warmer, that’s just the average. It can also rain in Iceland – a lot. You could go there and have rain for the whole vacation. So, come prepared for wind and rain and wear layers so you can modulate your temperature as the circumstance dictates.

The second big issue is that Iceland is galactically expensive. Food is three to four times the cost compared to America. This can come as a real shock for US visitors who are used to cheap food. This is less true for European tourists who are used to higher costs. Also, alcohol is very expensive. I believe that Iceland ranks right up there with the most expensive alcohol prices. If you drink, I would recommend buying your booze in the duty free store before you enter the country. You will be limited to certain quantities. Once you are in the country you will need to find a “Vin Bud,” pronounced, “veen booth” which literally means “wine store.” The Icelandic government has a monopoly on all alcohol and these are state run stores. There are many scattered around Reykjavik and here and there around the country. They are not always open, like 7-11’s in the states so, keep this in mind. If you buy drinks at a restaurant be prepared to be shocked. A beer is at least $10 and a glass of wine is anywhere between $10 and up. Eating out is tremendously expensive. I would recommend shopping for most of your meals if you can.

Next is the cost of rental cars and hotels. If you plan on traveling outside of Reykjavik, you will need a car unless you want to take a bus tour or jeep tour. If you are just going to stay in the capital you can get around just fine with the bus system, or on foot. If you do rent a car you should know that gas in Iceland is, currently, about $8.00 per gallon. So, make sure your budget can handle it. Hotel rooms are outrageous, so if you are willing to lower your room expectations, I would recommend staying at a guesthouse. Most of the guesthouses have common showers and a common kitchen so you can cook. There are many in Reykjavik and many more scattered around out in the country.

I know that I am not painting a very pretty picture here. But, in truth, if you have traveled to Europe you already know about high prices. It’s just that Iceland seems to take it a step further. But, you can get by with a little less and the pay off is that you will get to experience a truly wonderfully unique country. What I am saying is that, despite the costs, it is worth going. Just be prepared.

There are many things to do in Iceland. You can take bus tours, jeep tours, hiking tours, and just about every other outdoor pleasure you can imagine. You can enjoy the wonderful spas and pools all over Reykjavik, visit museums, art galleries and more. The downtown area of Reykjavik is very charming and old world. Other areas are very modern and cutting edge. The Reykjavik nightlife is pretty much world famous, so if you like to party then this is a good destination for you.

Cool Dudes Wear Mens Bomber Jackets

Posted on September 1st, 2010 in Parka by parka  Tagged ,

The mens bomber jackets may often be known as a flying or aviator jacket. They were worn by pilots as far back as the First World War and the birth of the aeroplane. Pilots wore leather coats because as the airplane ascended and flew fast the atmosphere became colder.

In 1915 pilots of the Royal Flying Corps wore long leather trench coats which were cumbersome and not conducive to the purpose for which they were intended. The shorter coat was manufactured in Britain in 1926.

It was not much later that the US Air Force started wearing the shorter coat which came only to the waist. The shorter coat was more practical for mobility and warmth

The original, or traditional designs were made of sheepskin with a strap on each shoulder held down with a button. They were convenient for carrying either a cap or gloves. They had a small fur collar, metal buttons and elastic at the waist and the wrists. The color was brown.

During the Second World War airplanes flew faster and higher and the atmosphere was colder reaching an altitude of twenty five thousand feet and a temperature of fifth eight degrees Fahrenheit. The leather coat was no longer practical.

Today the mens bomber jackets are a fashion statement with pockets for everything including a cell phone.

During the 40’s and 50’s they could often be seen worn by the top movie stars. Indeed movie stars still wear them, because they create an image of a handsome, rugged, hero.

There has always been a romance between men and their leather apparel and the mens bomber jackets with their rugged looks are no exception.

What is the Perfect Women’s Motorcycle Boot For You?

Posted on August 29th, 2010 in Parka by parka  Tagged , ,

You might think that choosing a motorcycle boot for women is as easy as it would be when you choose one for a man. However, it takes a little bit more than that to correctly choose a pair of motorcycle boots for a woman. Since women are very fickle-minded and style conscious, you have to first know the essential things that a woman wants to have in her pair of boots. Also to consider is a woman’s height, the type of riding she does, and the kind of motorcycle she rides. Nevertheless, there is always something for everyone in the women’s Harley Davidson boots collection.

Women who ride a cruiser would prefer to wear a more classic styled boot. This is just right since women tend to match their preferences from apparels to motorcycles. Women who are involved in sports racing would definitely pick out something that is made for motorcycle racing. This goes to show the women are most likely to pick out functional yet stylish boots at the same time.

Whatever style the woman prefers to have, it still boils down to how the boot fits the woman’s feet. This should be the most important consideration to make. The fit of a boot should be firm but not too tight. It should also lace up or zip up, depending on the type of opening/closing system the boot has, securely above the ankle. This should be so in order for the boot to provide support in balancing the load of the bike and also so that the boots will not come off during an accident.

Women who frequently go on long distance drives on their motorcycles should consider having a waterproofed motorcycle boots. Exposure to the harsh conditions of the environment will lessen the lifespan of a motorcycle boot, which is why it is necessary that the boot chosen will handle this just fine. Waterproofed motorcycle boots will extend the life span of the boots as well as give comfort to the rider. Several boots from the women’s Harley Davidson boots collection are waterproofed for this reason alone.

Boots with steel toes can be very good choices because it gives a woman more protection for her feet in the event of an accident or fall. The sole design is another factor which will improve the total riding experience of a motorcycle rider. When you buy a pair of motorcycle boots for women, make sure that they aren’t the usual cowboy boots because these boots do not protect the rider fully. The soles of these boots are smooth which can lead to sliding on wet surfaces. Good motorcycle boots provide good traction in both wet and dry pavements.

Boots with deep rubber soles are your best bet if you want a pair of motorcycle boots since they give you excellent traction and helps absorb vibration. If you feel that leather is too much for your feet to handle, then you can opt to get boots that offer some ventilation in its make. Most importantly however is you choose boots that will allow you to freely control your motorcycle without so much of a hassle.

Summer Clothing Tips For Yellowstone Tours

Posted on August 25th, 2010 in Parka by parka  Tagged , ,

But to get the most out of your Yellowstone adventure tours, you have to know how to dress. And what to pack.

The elevation of Yellowstone is quite high – an average of 7,500 feet – which means it’s cooler than some other vacation spots, and can get downright cold at night. June through September the highs average from just below 70 degrees to nearly 80, but the evening low will probably be in the 40s. So …

*Layers are important. The mornings and evenings will be cool, but it will be much warmer during the day.

*For light, easy to carry and pack layers, I would suggest silk gloves, socks and t-shirts. Silk insulates for both heat and cold, is light, not bulky, non-chaffing, and absorbs moisture. Silk garments will also roll into a small ball in your bag so you can easily carry them with you on your outings. Very popular with outdoor sports enthusiasts and, these days, not expensive.

*Raingear – June can be quite rainy, July and August are drier but afternoon rain is not uncommon. Your best bet is a rain parka – they fold up into a small square that’s easy to pack in your suitcase and to take with you on excursions.

Winter speaks for itself – hey, it’s winter. Winter dressing for Yellowstone tours isn’t much different than winter dressing anywhere. But do follow the guidelines above for spring and summer.

Check out Yellowstone tours and adventure travel tours – they’re inexpensive, and will be one of the most eventful but relaxing vacations ever!

The Backpacking Checklist

Posted on August 24th, 2010 in Parka by parka  Tagged ,

Our Backpacker’s Checklist is offered as a near minimum for a safe and comfortable backpack outing.

At first glance the list may appear extensive, but many of the items will be shared with other members in your hiking party. Pre-planning will prevent duplication. Divvy up shared items among all the packs. Equipment marked with a “*” is optional depending on the season, weather, geography, and personal need. Equipment listed in bold type should be carried at all times, even when day hiking, as an unexpected emergency may keep you overnight.

When you return from a trip, eliminate the “extras” you thought you’d use and didn’t. After a few trips you’ll know your personal requirements and the best place for everything in your pack.

Direct Mail Advertising Company Says "Mail Fewer Pieces, Make More Money"

Posted on August 23rd, 2010 in Parka by parka  Tagged , , , , ,

You’ll make more money in direct mail by selling to

fewer people.

The Sears and Roebuck direct mail catalog made

money by selling everything to everybody until niche

marketers arrived. Today, if you want to buy a parka

for that trip to Peru, you shop from the L. L. Bean

mail order catalog. If you want a quality vacuum

cleaner, you mail the order form and your check to

Oreck, not General Electric. Direct mail is a niche

game. Your success

depends on narrowing your focus.

You can’t hope to dominate 100 percent of any

market. So you should decide on the slice of the

market you want to dominate, and go after it.

Amazon used to be the world’s biggest bookstore.

Now they sell everything to everyone. Clothes.

Lipstick. Cameras. Groceries. Industrial tools.

Jewellery. Music. Toys.

Amazon took years to turn a profit selling just books.

They stand no chance selling against tightly

focussed competitors (where would you go to buy

toys, for example, Amazon or Toys R Us?). Success

in direct mail marketing goes to the specialists, not

the generalists.

You will make more money over the long term by

narrowing your focus to one type of customer

(female CEOs, let’s say), one product line

(women’s business suits, for example) or one

customer problem (working mothers, for

example).

Narrowing your product line makes you more

memorable in the mail. The Scrubs & Beyond catalog

catches the attention of hospital administrators

because it carries a complete line of scrubs, uniforms

and accessories for nursing and medical

professionals. The House of Cans catalog stands out

in a cluttered marketplace because it features

square, oblong and paint cans.

Even businesses who use direct mail to generate

sales leads can stand out in the mailbox by narrowing

their focus. One of my clients, for example, helps

franchises conduct personality tests on potential

franchisees. A general management consultant can’t

hope to take away any market share from this

specialist.

Another client of mine specializes in helping hospital

emergency department staff deliver better

emergency care experiences to children and families.

A paediatrician with a general practice can’t hope to

compete against this niche consultant who

specializes in paediatric emergency medicine and

teaches at a medical school.

So go ahead. Be brave. Narrow your focus. Mail

fewer pieces. Make more money.
